Socha Na Tha

This is written based on a Hindi Series - Iss Pyar Ko Kya Naam Doon - Watch it on Star Plus Monday to Friday 8pm

It had been a week since that night when despite all the insults, all the accusations, wrong ones at that, Khushi had swallowed her pride and for the sake of her family, especially her now ailing father, she had silently accepted the money.

The next morning she had gone to Devi Maiyya's temple to ask her for a sign, if the money was something she should take or let this go and look for a different avenue than Raizada's to help her family out of this crisis.

On reaching there she had found Anjali sobbing away in the temple as she had stood there on the bottom step holding her umbrella firmly to shelter herself from the pelting rain. She looked up at the sky and felt at least it was supporting her, shedding the tears she could not for that would worry Buaji and Jiji. She knew they were rattled by her silence. And she had refused to say another word to anyone before she had made up her mind. Her Amma's words had kept whirring in her mind. She had wanted her reply from Devi Maiyya and it seemed Anjali had wanted the same. About to go towards Anjali, she saw from the corner of her eye a white car and heard the screeching sound of tires as it braked to her left.

She recognised that car and stood still. Why did Arnav Singh Raizada have that effect on her she wondered. She then saw him jump out of the car and sprint towards the temple and took the stairs two at a time. He stopped at the top step, removed his shoes as if it was an after thought and threw them behind him without looking back. His eyes were focussed on his sister. He went up to her unmindful of being drenched, and cupped her face and she heard him mumble something but it was unclear to her. But she could see that he was trying to explain something to her which made her smile and then she smiled herself as Anjali hugged him and he gathered her into his arms and then she saw his lips mouth "I am sorry Di."

Khushi felt she had got her answer then. Arnav Singh Raizada was the most insufferable man she had had misfortune to fall in the arms of but he did care for his sister and his sister wanted his happiness for which she wanted her to train Lavanya. If it meant gulping down her pride and not disabusing Mr Raizada of his impression of her in the choicest words she knew, she would do it. For the sake of her family, she would do anything and no Raizada was going to come in her way.

After all, her conditions would stand. She would go to the Shantivan after the "Shantibhang" left it and she would leave before his return. She had bowed to Devi Maiyya and had explained the situation to Buaji and Payal who were adamant that she should not go back to work after all the insults he had hurled. But Khushi had quieted them with simple reason that their father was ill and the money that they have will help them in a long way to restore their financial security.

Things had been going well. There had been no sign of Arnav Singh Raizada when she had gone to Shantivan everyday and that had kept her spirits going. Lavanya was yet to make any concrete efforts in learning. But she knew consistency would bring results. She knew patience and hard work would not go unrewarded and soon Lavanya would learn the ways Naani finds important for her bahu. There was still time. Rome was not built in a day, anyway.

Khushi had been feeling a little restless ever since she had woken up. Something was bothering her. She called home to find if her parents were fine. But even her Babuji had sounded as if he was in good spirits. The money had paved a way for their recovery. But there was still something she felt within her which niggled. Something was wrong somewhere, she felt it.

Shaking the feeling she reached Shantivan. She entered the house and the feeling returned full force. She felt he was there. But then she looked at her watch and knew he should be in office already it was way past ten.

Jaiprakash opened the door and she asked after Lavanya, when she was informed that she had gone to the office but that she should be back soon was the message left with him. Wondering why would she have gone to office when she knew Khushi was going to be there for her training. Today on the list was how to prepare for the aarti in the morning as Anjali and her husband were to go out of town for a week this morning. So, from tomorrow, it would Lavanya who was to take care of that duty.

Speculating reasons for her absence she went into the pooja room to assemble the plate and other ingredients for aarti when Naani came to her and said, "mein aur Manorama jaa rahein hain bahar kuch kaam se. Aap sambhal lena. Jaiprakash ko humne bheja hai shaam ke liye sabji laane. Aap theek hongi na, hum kuchai der ma aa jaavenge."

Nodding her acquiescence, as there was nothing much for her to do anyway, she started pottering around the pond and admired the flowers and plants that were pruned neatly and his image of doing just that popped into her head of the day she had come to give the report. Shaking herself out of the reverie, she touched one rose when she heard a sound coming from beyond the door. She turned around to hear better and walked towards it. She then heard a thud sound, looking around to see if there was anyone who needed help, she yelled out, "Kaun hai?" But all she heard was a grunt.

Wondering if it was Laxmi who had gotten herself hurt, she opened the door to find Arnav sprawled near the bathroom. She stood there for few seconds, unable to believe her eyes. He can't be there. But another grunt from him propelled her into action and she ran up to him and slid next to him holding his shoulder and turning him to see.

"kya hua hai aapko?" Khushi asked with concern.

In reply all she got was grunt though he tried to move her hand away but then clutched his stomach.

She asked again more firmly, "Kya hua hai bataiye, ya hum aapko yahin chorr jaaye?"

"Woh…. meri dawaai…" Arnav tried haltingly and pointed to the bathroom.

"Kaunsi dawaai?" Khushi asked looking around the room. "Hua kya hai?"

"my stomach hurts and I cant see very well. My sugar level must be up. Get me my medicine…" Arnav managed in between ragged breath. But he looked wretched and seemed he was hardly able to breathe. Khushi got up and went to the cabinet and picked out all the medicines as she did not know which he needed.

By the time she went back with them, Arnav had fainted. Worried at what to do now, she went back into the bathroom and pulled a napkin from the railing, wet it and then took back to wring the towel to let drops of water fall on his face.

He came to but he could not keep his eyes open for long.

"Mujhe kuch dikh nahi raha….Khushi…" Arnav muttered.

Khushi put her arm under his shoulder and whispered, "Chaliye aap uthne ki koshish kijiye… aapko mein bistar par leta doon."

Khushi put in humongous effort to make him sit up and he slumped into her. Supporting his head in the crook of her neck she again placed the wet napkin on his brow and get him to open his eyes.

"aankhein kholo Arnavji." And then tapped her hand on his cheek to stir him. But he refused to budge.

Not knowing what to do, she tried to get to the phone but it was out of reach. Placing his head down again she tried to extend to reach the phone while sitting itself when suddenly his hand held hers and he muttered, "mujhe chorr ke mat jaao Khushi."

The phone forgotten, Khushi just stared at him and wondered if she had heard him right. This man who proclaimed that he hated the sight of her was telling her not to go?

She tried to reach again and finally caught the phone. It was Arnav's mobile. She searched under doctor and dialed the number. When the doctor picked up, she recounted what had happened and the doctor told her to just keep him steady and that he would reach there as soon as possible. He also asked her to keep him awake.

Heaving a sigh that help was on its way, she got up and filled a glass of water to drink when he muttered, "Paani… paani.."

She immediately ran to his side lifted his head up and made him sip water. He coughed and she rubbed his back to alleviate the constriction. She was supporting his back with one arm and moved against the wall to find support for herself and him.

Following doctor's orders, she started talking to him about anything. She told him how she put towel on his face. How the doctor was on his way. How there was no one in the house.

Suddenly he opened his eyes looked at her and said, "Toh ab tum bol rahi ho mujhse."

Khushi stopped looked at him and was lost in his eyes which seemed to look right into her. She tried to get up and move away but he held her hand.

"Kyon koi jawab nahi hai Khushi Kumari Gupta…"Arnav tried but he closed his eyes as all strength left him.

Khushi fell back on her knees and said, "Ye gussa baad mein nikaal lena Laat Governor, abhi batao woh goli kaunsi hai."

Arnav was about to point out when the doorbell rang. Settling Arnav comfortably near the wall, she ran up to the door and let the doctor in.

Once the doctor had given him the injection and had asked her to monitor him till he arranged for a nurse, he left and it was back to Arnav and Khushi alone in the huge house.

Khushi went into the kitchen and made something for him to eat quickly and took it to his room on a tray with ginger tea without sugar.

Arnav sitting up against pillows on his bed raised his eyebrow at this unexpected kindness from Khushi.

She saw the look but ignoring it placed the tray in front of him and said, "Khaiye."

When he did not make a move for a minute or so, she said cuttingly, "Meine isme zeher nahi milaya hai, kha kar bataon?" and glared at him.

She was stunned when a lopsided smile graced his lips. She blinked as if not sure if he had smiled at her.

Smiling back Khushi tried to turn when he held her wrist and said, "Thank you Khushi, agar aaj tum nahi hoti, toh…."

Khushi thought to herself, socha na tha kabhi ye laad governor mujhe thank you bolega.

Socha na Tha - Kabhi Dil ke Kareeb

Kabhi dil ke kareeb,
Tumhe mere naseeb
Yun layenge
Socha na tha
Ik chahat ka pal
Sab sawaalon ka hal
Yun paayenge
Socha na tha
Kabhi dil ke kareeb

Aankhein jo ab meri aakhon me hai
Dhund raha tha kai saalon se (2)
Kitani milti hai aakhein ye
Khwabon se mere, khayalon se
Ke haqeeqat me hum
Sapano ka sanam
Yun payenge
Socha na tha
Kabhi dil ke kareeb
Tumhe mere naseeb

Kabhi tanha baithe baithe yunhi
Pal me hi mai gum ho jaati thi (2)
Mai bhi kahaan mai rehti thi
Aksar mai tum ho jaati thi
Ye ajab si khata
Aur iski sazaa
Yun payenge socha na tha

Kabhi dil ke kareeb
Tumhe mere naseeb
Yun layenge socha na tha
Ik chahat ka pal
Sab sawaalo ka hal
Yun payenge socha na tha
