Burn For You

This is a scene written on characters in a Hindi Series Iss Pyar Ko Kya Naam Doon on Star Plus - Watch it Monday to Friday at 8pm.

BURN FOR YOU

A roller coaster of emotions, that is what she took him through. Arnav wondered, what was it about her that made him feel extreme emotions in space of few minutes. First she angered him, then she made him feel contrite and then when he had gone to apologize, she had thrown the hot tea on him. Did he deserve it? Is that why he had not said anything to her?

And then she had come, holding an ointment and he had rebuked that too. Why? "For I am not a child," he answered his own question. She had tried to say something, but he had closed the door on her face for she was making him face many things, he was not ready for. Will he ever be ready for that? Arnav Singh Raizada was now making a habit being wrong where that girl was concerned. And that he could not stand. How did a chit of a girl make him, him feel guilty so easily. Never.

He decided he needed to soothe his burning soul. The salve for the burn on his chest was one thing, but there was nothing that would stop the burning inside. No, may be there was. And he went there. His garden. The soothing  lap of water which came ever so once in a while when breeze blew. The rustling of the leaves soothed him every time. And of course, he wanted to rake the mud, mud of his soul to quiet the disquiet. And then he felt her.

Why did he always feel her? But he wanted to confirm so he looked down and saw her shoes. Yes, she was there. His heart skipped a beat but he schooled his face and asked not as sternly as he wanted to, "Tum yahan kya karne aayee ho." And he had looked at her.

And Damn! something happened to him. Those luminous eyes, filled with tears and they quieted his soul. What his garden could not do, her tears seemed to do. Why every time she cried, something happened to him. He waited as she fumbled through a speech. Speech asking for forgiveness and he had smiled.

She was unbelievable. What had she said? She had put mango juice because she did not find orange juice? Had she referred to a book of pranks to play on him and improvised when the manual said, put orange juice in the shoes?

He smiled again as he thought back on what she had said. And shook his head. Only Khushi could ignore his offer of tissue and use her dupatta to wipe her running nose and tears?

Unbelievable.

As he stood there thinking about her, he heard Anjali come in and say, "Chote Lavanya se Laxmi kho gayee hai."

"What?" Arnav rolled his eyes.

"Where is Lavanya." Arnav asked.

"Woh Nani, usse daant rahe hain. Woh toh mein sambhaal loongi. Par Khushi gayee hai Laxmi ko dhoondne. Chote jaaiye, uski madad kijiye. Laxmi ko lekar aaiye." Anjali pleaded.

"Khushi gayee hai? akeli?" Arnav asked worriedly.

Arnav picked up his car keys and realised, his SUV was at the Garage, so he picked up the bike keys and ran to the garage.

He scoured the streets looking for Khushi and the blessed goat. Why did the women in his life do the most stupid thing. One lost the damn goat and the other was out there looking for it.

Cursing under his breath, he screeched to a halt as he saw, Khushi, walking in his direction, holding the goat.

He sighed with relief. As he got off the bike and stood in front of her, Khushi stopped and moved backwards.

He realised he had not removed his helmet and said, "Khushi, mein hoon!"  placed it on the handle after removing it.

"Oh! aap! Aap bike chalate ho?" Khushi asked inanely.

"Woh chorro, tum aise akele kahan chali gayee thi?" Arnav roared. His anger returning with his relief at seeing her safe.

"Aap chilaane ke alaawa kuch aur kar nahi sakte? Hum do ghante se Laxmi ko dhoondh rahe the. Aur usse thori chot lagi hai toh humne utha liya usse. Bhaari hai. Par Laat Governor kya kareinge. Madad. Nahi. Woh chilaayenge." Khushi accused still clutching Laxmi.

"Laao. Do laxmi ko." Arnav asked her to relieve the goat.

About to hand over, his hand on hers made her shiver and her hold on laxmi slackened. She moved forward to get the grip back and so did Arnav to take hold of Laxmi as she scrambled from between them and jumped out of the hold. Losing balance, Khushi tipped forward and went into his arms. Arnav in a reflexive movement held her to him.

Laxmi forgotten, they stood there in each other's arms. Khushi's eyes darted to the patch of burn where his shirt lay open. Instinctively, she placed her lips against it as if to soothe the injury she had caused.

And they both froze.

Arnav's arms around her tightened as Khushi tried to move out of them. They stared at each other till they heard, "baaahhhh"

Letting each other go, both turned to look at Laxmi who was patiently waiting for them.

They turned and looked at one another sheepishly and then Arnav said, "Chalo baitho."

Khushi gave a quizzical look asking how for it was a bike. He then said,"Tum pehle baitho. Mein Laxmi ko tumhari goud mein deta hoon aur phir mein baith jaaonga."

Managing the task with some difficulty. They went back home with laxmi placed in between them.

Arnav could not believe what had just happened. Had Khushi kissed his burn?

Pulling hard on the accelerator he sped back home, lest his wayward thoughts took him some place else.
