A Different Corner

He entered his home and felt his neck tingle in awareness. Awareness of her; she was around here, he felt. He walked into the living room with eyes searching around when he saw a dupatta flutter in the kitchen area. He walked towards the kitchen and saw her cooking something and that gave  him the strangest feeling. Was he going mad? He seemed to think of her all the time and now he was even imagining her in his home. He shook his head to get the vision out. But it stayed. This he could not tolerate. He would not give in this easily. Not to his emotions, however hard they came like the surf hitting the cliff repetitively, eroding each layer of rock slowly but surely. No, Arnav Singh Raizada was made of sterner stuff than even igneous rock and no ocean was strong enough to erode his decisions.

Watching her enraged him and he walked with angry long strides and pulled her arm as she went to put salt into the vegetables, as her presence seemed to be doing to his wounds. He was burning up, with need, need to pull her into him and push her away from him. What was it that made him want to do two opposing things at the same time. Why could he not resist her?

He gritted his teeth and snapped at her, "What the hell are you doing her in my house, I want you out of here right now."

Khushi looked at him stubbornly, refusing to budge or to speak to him and look at him. He put a hand under her chin and grunted, "You will look at me when i talk to you… you hear?"

Khushi jerked her head away and tried to move around him but he cornered her near the wall and backed her up against it. She tried to move first left then right only to be trapped within the arms he put beside her.

Khushi looked down at her feet trying to be like an ostrich but she knew his aftershave assailed her nostrils and she inhaled deeply instinctively as if to take in his fragrance and relegate it to memory.

Khushi tried to duck under his arm when he leaned closer to her and reducing the distance between them and murmured, "Aaj tum mujhse sune bina kahin nahi jaaogi. Agar mujhe tumhein uthakar bhi le jaana pade toh mein aaj tumhein bhaagne nahi doonga."

Khushi looked at him with venom in her eyes, suddenly her fear of him evaporated and she spat, "Kyon apne aap ko laat governor samajhte ho kya ki, jo chahoge karoge? Mujhe aapse koi baat nahin karni aur mein sunnane waali bhi nahi hoon. Aap mujhse aise battamizee nahi kar sakte."

Stunned at her response he was about to shake her when he heard someone come into the kitchen and saw Anjali come in.

"Arre Chote, tum aa gaye office se?" Anjali looked at the scene before her in shock but hid it for it would not serve her purpose.

Arnav stepped back from Khushi and turned towards Anjali and said, "Di, ye kya hai? Ye yahan kya kar rahi hai? Mujhe iski soorat bhi nahi dekhni. Keh dijiye iss ki yaahan se chali jaaye… to just get out of here…"

Anjali looked at Arnav with open mouth and hearing the raised voices, Naani and Mami followed them, when Khushi slinked past them and went away.

Anjali turned to see Khushi depart and faced Arnav with hurt and annoyance.

"Aisa kya kiya hai usne jo tum bina jaane ki kyon hai woh yahan, usse ghar se nikaal rahe ho. Kya ek din mujhe bhi aise apne ghar se jaane ko keh doge Chotte?" Anjali sobbed as tears welled up in her eyes.

"Di! Ye aap kya keh rahi hai. Mein kyon aapko kahoonga kabhi…aise…" He tried to salvage the situation and put a hand on Anjali's shoulder, but she brushed it aside and said, "Mein tumhari zindagi mein dakhal kar rahi hoon na. Mein ye chahti hoon na ki Naani khush ho La mein aisi khoobiyan paakar jo woh apni bahu mein dekhna chahti hain. Aur meine Khushi ko iss kaam ke liye usse yahan apne ghar mein bulaya tha, taaki tum khush raho chotte aur Naani bhi. Sab meri galati hai."

"Aaj Khushi ko mein yahan laayee isiliye ho sakta hai tume mujhe bhi apne ghar se jaane ko keh do." she added haltingly.

Arnav feeling contrite tried to placate her but Anjali seemed inconsolable. He then said, "Theek hai Di, aap bolo kya chahiye aapko, aapki khushi kisme hai?"

"Tumne Khushi ko ghar se jaane ke liye kaha hai, tum usse wapis laao. Tum karo tab mujhe lagega ki meine galati nahi ki, ki mujhe tumhari pasand ko aur Naani ki pasand ko ek karna tha woh faisla galat nahi tha. Mein chahti hoon ki La ek achchi bahu ban jaaye Khushi ki madad se jo Naani ko chahiye waise sanskaar seekhe toh sab khush rahein iss ghar mein. Kya mein kuch jyaada chahti hoon?"

And suddenly she swooned and would have fallen if Arnav had not picked her up.

Once settling his sister comfortably in her room and doctor advising them to take care of her due to her low BP and stress, Arnav went into his room to pace frantically to work out how to bring back Khushi without eating his words.

He was not going to let her win on this one. But how did he do it without damaging his ego.

Suddenly he got a plan; he acted on it immediately by placing strategic calls and setting things in motion.

Once things were settled, he went to Khushi's place to find the house locked yet again. She could not gone back to Lucknow he wondered. Not again. He asked around at the garage to find that she had gone with her sister and Bua to a temple nearby. He located the temple and walked in to find  her praying.

He went and stood next to her looking at her. Her sister or aunt were no where to be seen. He then pulled out papers from his jacket and held them in front of her.

Hearing the fluttering sound of paper, Khushi opened her eyes to find a hand with some papers in front her. She looked to where the hand ended and stiffened as she saw Arnav.

She took a step or two backwards, when he said, "Ye tumhare papa ki dukaan ke papers."

Hearing that Khushi looked at him shocked only hear him add, "woh dukaan ab girvi nahi hai…"

"Kya?" She asked, as she finally took the papers and leafed through them to realise that it said that the shop now had no debt and belonged to Shashi Kumar Gupta.

She looked at him incredulously.

"Ghabrao mat, ye meine tumhare liye nahi apni Di ke liye kiya hai. Tum naukari pe wapis aa jao, La ko train karo aur ye papers le lena. Ek mahine mein La ko train karo aur papers tumhare." He explained, taking the papers back.

Khushi gaped. The man was impossible. He always had to have a condition to everything. First he told her to get out now this. His sister had asked for money. This one was giving money. Were Raizada's just this? Taking advantage of her situation to suit their needs?

Angry at the prospect, she bristled at him with, "No, I dont want the papers and I dont want to go back. You and sister figure out how to train La or whoever. I have had enough of you and your family. I am going to stay away from you and Delhi. So leave me alone."

Arnav not wanting her to run away, took hold of her wrist and pulled her towards him and said, "Tum kahin nahin jaa rahi ho. Pata hai Di, behosh ho gayee hain, tumhare jaane se aur mein aaya hoon, tumhein lene, kisi bhi haalaat mein. Jaroorat padi toh…"

"Toh ka babua…? Hain, Khushi bitiya ko…ka kar lai ho?" Buaji came swinging her plait around her neck and taking a stance to battle with Arnav.

Arnav instead of letting go of Khushi, tightened his hold on her and Khushi tried to wriggle out of his grasp and one of her bangles broke. Arnav let go of her hand immediately and looked her her wrist and then at her. In the meantime, Payal had rushed to Khushi as she had seen blood on her wrist and asked Khushi if she got hurt but realised it was not Khushi's blood but Arnav's who hand had been cut and blood was oozing down to drip on the floor.

Suddenly, Khushi tore a corner of her dupatta and held his hand to tie the wound as Arnav stood there lost in his thoughts.

Khushi asked if he was alright and he nodded absently.

"Hai Devi Maiyaa, ye kya ho gaya…" she muttered when she felt Arnav put his hand on hers which was dressing his wound.

Khushi looked up to find his eyes on hers and could not take her eyes from his as they bore into hers with a strange emotion that seemed to say something to her but she feared it for it would mean something that she was not ready to accept.

He could not have looked at her with tenderness. No he always looked at with hatred and God knows what had she ever done to him to deserve this.

Suddenly she heard him say, "Ghar chalo Khushi."

And she found she could not say no and walked with him, as he took her hand and led her to the car.

Buaji and Payal just watched them go away in amazement.

Just then Aakash came out of the car and came up to Payal to inform her that he would drop them home.

Arnav did not what had just happened. What was the connection with her that made him proprietorial towards her? Why did he come to find her when he knew he should let her go away? Why did he do random acts of kindness for her when he hated the sight of her?

What made Arnav Singh Raizada lose sleep over a girl?

What made him feel so drawn to her?

What was happening to him?

He refused to accept that it was love. So what was it?

Different Corner - George Michael.

I'd say love was a magical thing
I'd say love would keep us from pain
Had I been there, had I been there

I would promise you all of my life
But to lose you would cut like a knife
So I don't dare, no I don't dare

'Cause I've never come close in all of these years
You are the only one to stop my tears
And I'm so scared, I'm so scared

Take me back in time maybe I can forget
Turn a different corner and we never would have met
Would you care?

I don't understand it, for you it's a breeze
Little by little, you've brought me to my knees
Don't you care?

No, I've never come close in all of these years
You are the only one to stop my tears
I'm so scared of this love

And if all that there is, is this fear of being used
I should go back to being lonely and confused
If I could, I would, I swear
